Raising Bar For Women's Health And Fitness In Cherbourg

Dept of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Communications

Women and girls in Cherbourg now have access to a culturally appropriate space to connect, be active and build healthier lifestyles thanks to the Albanese Government's Play Our Way Program.

Cherbourg Aboriginal Shire Council received $426,859 to open the Jundah Gym, a dedicated women's only fitness space at the Les Stewart Memorial Sports Complex.

The funding will help the council employ two community-based fitness officers to coordinate outdoor group activities such as walking, hiking, running and water sports.

The Albanese Government's $200 million Play Our Way grant program supports local initiatives to overcome barriers that women and girls face in participating in sport.

Quotes attributable to Minister for Sport, Anika Wells:

"Through the Play Our Way program, we are giving women and girls the opportunities they deserve to access, participate and stay involved in sports and physical activity.

"It means rural communities like Cherbourg now have access to safe and inclusive facilities that empower women and girls to prioritise their health and wellbeing.

"From boosting confidence to supporting active lifestyles, the Jundah Gym will create long lasting opportunities to learn, connect and thrive."

Quotes attributable to Councillor for Cherbourg Aboriginal Shire Council, Carla Fisher:

"Our women are the strength behind our families, the keepers of knowledge and leaders of future generations.

"This Jundah ("women" in Koa Language) Gym is more than a place to exercise. It's a space where our Elders, mothers, aunties and young women can come together, support one another, and build strong, healthy and empowered lives."
