Raising flag: transgender and gender diversity

This week we are flying flags on our town halls to recognise the achievements of our trans and gender diverse community in Yarra.

As part of our commitment to building a healthy and inclusive community, Yarra Council unanimously adopted a LGBTIQ+ Strategy in December last year. The strategy includes provisions for flying specific flags at particular times of the year.

The decision around which flags to fly followed extensive consultation with Victoria's LGBTIQ+ community and ensures a broader range of LGBTIQ+ groups are acknowledged and represented throughout the year.

Trans day of visibility

Wednesday March 31 is Trans Day of Visibility, an international day of recognition and celebration of trans people.

Yarra Council, Yarra Libraries and Youth Services have worked together to produce this short video featuring local trans people.

Yarra Mayor Gabrielle de Vietri said:

"We are committed to supporting all people in Yarra to feel included and welcome. Trans and gender diverse people often have to overcome many barriers and by flying the flag this week we recognise their struggle as well as their contribution."
