Ranger relay to raise funds for Timor-Leste National Park

Guy Barnett, Acting Minister for Parks,

The Tasmanian Government wishes Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Rangers the best of luck for their relay from Penguin, on the North-West Coast, to Cockle Creek in the South to raise funds for Forest Guards in Timor-Leste's only National Park, Nino Konis Santana National Park.

Organised by the Tasmanian Ranger Association, with support from the Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service, the 525-kilometre relay route is primarily through the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area.

The relay starts tomorrow (Saturday, October 9) and aims to finish up on November 9.

Funds raised will purchase motorcycles and basic equipment for the Timor-Leste National Park, including backpacks and first aid kits.

It is great to see participants from the TRA and PWS participate in this gruelling relay for such a fantastic cause, while also experiencing some of the very best locations Tasmania has to offer.

Teams will be relaying through iconic areas of Tasmania including the Overland Track, South Coast track and Penguin Cradle Trail. There will be legs of cycling through the Florentine Valley and kayaking down Lake Pedder. Participants will also complete the relay on some of Tasmania's offshore islands, including Deal Island and Macquarie Island.

The Government wishes all the participants the very best for this event and commend all those involved for their support of this very worthy cause.

The event is in partnership with PWS, Conservation International, the Thin Green Line Foundation and the Council of Oceania Rangers Association.
