Reconciliation Week Celebrations

Students to Unite for Shellharbour's Reconciliation Walk

Aboriginal Elders, civic leaders, and school children will come together on Monday, 2 June for Shellharbour City Council's annual Reconciliation School Flag Walk at Reddall Reserve East.

Held during National Reconciliation Week (27 May to 3 June), the walk invites people of all ages to reflect on our shared histories, cultures and achievements, and to take meaningful steps forward, together.

This year's theme, Bridging Now to Next, is a powerful reminder that reconciliation is an ongoing journey, one that connects where we've come from with where we're headed. It invites all of us to listen, learn and act, together.

Shellharbour Mayor Chris Homer said the event offered a powerful opportunity to learn from the past and build stronger relationships.

"Our Reconciliation School Flag Walk is a significant event for our city. It brings people together, especially our young people, to acknowledge our history and walk forward side by side," Mayor Homer said.

"Reconciliation is everyone's responsibility. It starts with awareness and relationships, and it's encouraging to see our students engage with such care and respect."

More than 650 students from 35 local schools will walk from Warilla-Barrack Point Surf Life Saving Club to Reddall Reserve East, proudly carrying flags as a symbol of unity and respect. With around 1000 people expected to attend, the event brings together people of all ages in a meaningful and visible commitment to reconciliation.

They'll be joined by members of the Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal community in a shared act of recognition and connection. Following the walk, a ceremony and flag exchange will take place, along with cultural performances, a Coomaditchie art workshop, and other activities.
