People in East Arnhem are seeing life-changing results, with the ophthalmology team delivering a record number of cataract surgeries for Gove patients.
38 remote residents had vision restored.
The CLP Government is focused on real results -better healthcare, better outcomes that help Territorians live happier and healthier lives.
The Finocchiaro CLP Government is backing its frontline health teams, celebrating record cataract surgeries in Gove that are restoring sight and improving quality of life.
Minister for Health Steve Edgington said the team had helped restore vision to 38 people during a three-day trip to Gove to improve eye health in remote and regional areas recently.
"Every operation is changing lives - delivering better eye health outcomes for people in communities around Gove. Congratulations on this visionary work by the NT Health ophthalmology team.
"The ophthalmology team's record achievement surpasses the 22 cataract operations performed in October 2024, which is a result of increased testing and greater surveillance of patient conditions.
"We're focused on real results - better healthcare, better outcomes, that show we're serious about making sure every Territorian has the chance to live a healthier, happier life no matter where they live," Mr Edgington said.
The ophthalmology team comprises two ophthalmologists (specialist eye doctors), a nurse, an orthoptist (specialist in eye movement) and an optometrist.
Vision loss can impact a person's overall health, reducing their quality of life and ability to function.
Mr Edgington said for the health staff, one of the best parts of the job is working with locals and hearing firsthand how the cataract surgeries help them regain their confidence and ability to undertake everyday tasks.
