Today marks one year since Tasmania's container refund scheme, Recycle Rewards, commenced.
In the past 12 months Tasmanians have returned more than 118 million eligible containers through the scheme, reducing litter and improving recycling outcomes.
The scheme is a key initiative of the Tasmanian Government to reduce litter, increase recycling and support the development of a circular economy.
Minister for Environment, Madeleine Ogilvie, said we have delivered a scheme which has enabled Tasmanians to collect more than $11 million in refunds.
"Recycle Rewards has been incredibly successful for Tasmania, not only because of the environmental benefits, but also by how enthusiastically Tasmanians have adopted the scheme," Minister Ogilvie said.
"We have returned more eligible containers in the first year per capita in Tasmania than any other state or territory.
"Additionally, the implementation of Recycle Rewards has created more than 60 local jobs, many of these through social enterprises."
"Tasmanians have also generously supported charities, with over $310,000 donated to a variety of charities including Guide Dogs Tasmania, Country Women's Association and Oz Harvest."
Drink containers make up to 45 per cent of Tasmania's litter, with every eligible container returned through the scheme, potential litter is recycled and directly diverted from landfill.
Recycle Rewards currently has 49 refund points available statewide including reverse vending machines, four major depots and sorting infrastructure.
