Townsville City Council has awarded a contract to Clean-TeQ to build and operate a recycled water re-use plant.
The water re-use plant will process treated wastewater, producing high quality recycled water to be used on sporting fields, public spaces and for industrial use.
The Clean-TeQ facility will be built at the Cleveland Bay Purification Plant.
The proposed partnership – for 25 years – between Clean-TeQ and Council will provide 10ML a day of high-quality recycled water for irrigation and a further 5ML a day for industrial users.
Mayor Jenny Hill said the recycled water re-use plant was a key plank of Council's 3-point water security solution.
"Our community needs to use water as efficiently as possible and that's why the recycled water re-use scheme is so important," Cr Hill said.
"The plant will treat wastewater to a high standard where it can safely be used on playing fields and parks to keep our city green all year round."
Townsville Water and Waste Committee Chair Cr Russ Cook said the next steps with the project were to complete detailed design and the plant and pipe network to transport the recycled water to where it will be used.
"This is a huge milestone for the recycled water re-use scheme because it allows us to progress detailed designs for the plant that will treat the wastewater," Cr Cook said.
