Thank you to everyone who attended the Recycling Drop-off Day on Saturday 14 June, at the Winter Street pop-up park in Malvern. With over 200 visitors we managed to fill our large 40 cubic metre box truck with your tricky-to-recycle goods!
Textile waste alone had the following impact:
- 79% of items collected will be rehomed to communities that need them the most. The remaining items are repurposed into industrial rags, furniture padding, insulation filler and craft materials
- water savings: 10,550,000 L (the equivalent of doing 211,000 loads of washing in a front loader washing machine)
- greenhouse gas savings of 13,715kg, the equivalent of taking five cars off Australian roads for a year
- electricity savings of 20,983 kWh, equivalent to powering 1,166 Australian homes for one day.
Other waste collected also found new life
Soft plastics were taken directly to APR soft plastics to be broken down back into oil and made into new plastic.
Electronics were taken to our eWaste recycling partners. Here metals and other materials are broken down and repurposed.
- Plastic is reused in plastic fence posts, pallets, castings, toys and keyboards.
- Batteries are reused as new batteries.
- Precious metals are reused in jewellery and new electronics.
- Glass is recycled into screens for TVs, monitors and homewares.
Other metals are reused in new products and cabling.
We will hold another Recycling Drop-off Day 10am – 2pm Saturday 23 August 2025 at Phoenix Park Neighbourhood House.
However, there are ways to dispose of these items all-year round. Visit our A-Z Waste and Recycling Guide to find out more.
