Redbrick Reborn: Iconic University Building Unveiled

After three years hidden behind scaffolding, the University of Liverpool's iconic redbrick building, the Victoria Gallery & Museum (VG&M), has been revealed once more.

The Grade II listed building has been a central part of the University life for over a century. After time spent behind hoardings for essential roof restoration works, the fiery red building takes centre stage once again.

Built in 1892 and designed by Liverpool-born architect Alfred Waterhouse, best known for designing the Natural History Museum in London, the building was purpose-built for University College, Liverpool students. Made with ordinary bricks and terracotta dressings, the striking building went on to inspire the term 'redbrick university'. More than 100 years later, to celebrate the city's year as European Capital of Culture in 2008, the building was carefully renovated and transformed into a public gallery and museum. Now, it attracts more than 62,000 visitors a year and presents an exciting mix of events and exhibitions.

Meanwhile inside the VG&M, the Tate Hall Museum will open its doors later this year for the first time in five years with an exciting new exhibition, Lightbulb moments. Running from Thursday 11 September 2025 - autumn 2027, the free exhibition will explore the origins of some of Liverpool's greatest ideas.

Joanne Fitton, Deputy Director of Libraries, Museums and Galleries said: "The Victoria Gallery & Museum is a landmark at the heart of our campus - an iconic red-brick symbol of the University's heritage and a cornerstone in the history of higher education in the UK. For students, it's a backdrop to their academic journey, especially during graduation and we're delighted the building will be visible once again for this summer's ceremonies.

"It's fantastic to see this beautiful building revealed once again, following its extensive roof restoration. The reopening also marks the return of the Tate Hall Museum later this year. We're especially excited to launch Lightbulb Moments, an exhibition that invites visitors to delve into the origins of ground breaking ideas and the sparks that bring them to life. We look forward to sharing more about this unique exhibition in the coming weeks."
