Reef Communities Tackling Marine Debris

Dept of Climate Change, Energy, Environment & Water

The annual ReefClean Great Barrier Reef Clean-up has been launched in Townsville.

The event runs throughout October. It encourages communities, schools and local groups to take part in clean-up events across Queensland.

It aims to help reduce the amount of marine debris entering the Reef.

Marine debris is one of the biggest threats for the Reef. Reducing its impact is one of the most valuable, tangible things we can do to protect it.

Important marine debris data is also collected during the event. This data goes into the Australian Marine Debris Initiative (AMDI) Database.

The AMDI Database helps us identify the amounts and types of marine debris that are impacting our beaches.

The Great Barrier Reef Clean-up is part of the ReefClean Program. It is delivered in collaboration with Clean up Australia.

The ReefClean Program is run by Tangaroa Blue and funded by the Australian Government's Reef Trust.
