Remembering Hillcrest one year on: Mayor

Devonport City Council Tasmania
From Devonport Mayor Alison Jarman

The 16th December 2021 is a day that is etched in our memories forever. It's the day our hearts broke for the Hillcrest Primary School community.

The tragedy rocked our close-knit community, it will no doubt for a long time. It has been humbling to see such resilience shown by the people of Devonport.

It's hard to imagine how the past 12 months have been for the families and those affected deeply.

You are never far from our thoughts and I'm sure there isn't one person in our city that hasn't been impacted by the tragedy.

While it is still difficult to process for many, it is important that we all continue to support one another as best we can. And to continue to seek the necessary help we need.

For those attending Thursday's one year commemoration community event organised by the Tasmanian Government in consultation with the Hillcrest Affected Area Recovery Committee, please know that you are not alone. We are all there with you, remembering those precious children and those who have had to navigate this past year without them.

Are hearts are always with you.
