Round 11 of Remote Airstrip Upgrade Program will improve safety at more than 40 remote airports across Australia.
Remote communities across Australia can look forward to upgrades to over 40 airstrips and airports under Round 11 of the Remote Airstrip Upgrade Program.
The funding will improve aviation safety and deliver more resilient airports, while supporting local job creation during construction.
Improvements to be delivered include runway resurfacing, fencing, lighting and drainage works to increase safety and deliver better access.
Projects to receive funding under Round 11 include:
- $2,050,037 to Doomadgee Aboriginal Shire Council in Queensland to upgrade lighting and reseal the airstrip runway, taxiway and apron at Doomadgee Airport
- $1,228,000 for Brewarrina Shire Council in New South Wales to upgrade and refurbish pavements and lighting at the Brewarrina and Goodooga aerodromes.
- $400,000 for District Council of Streaky Bay in South Australia to reseal the Streaky Bay Aerodrome runway, taxiway and apron.
Safe, operational aerodromes are vital in the delivery of essential goods and services in remote and very remote communities, particularly where road access is unavailable, unreliable or disrupted for extended periods due to seasonal weather conditions, while creating opportunities for residents.
This includes services like the Royal Flying Doctor Service as well as improving access to work and education opportunities.
In the 2024-25 Budget, the Australian Government announced an additional $50 million over three years to extend the RAU program.
