My PhD project is about…
… making railway infrastructure projects as efficient as possible by interviewing staff, who work on such projects as well as sitting in on their meetings and studying their project management documents. By doing this, we can realise the environmental benefits but also reduce the disruption to passengers.
When looking at different ways to organise rail infrastructure projects you have to consider the size, timing and also different specialisms like electrification, signalling, and the heavy equipment needed to do the work, and it's a real puzzle to fit all the different activities into the time available while the tracks are closed.
When taking on large projects rail infrastructure owners need to understand how the projects affect the supply chain, the environment, the operators, and balance all of these constraints and requirements. By doing that, it looks like we can make a big impact considering the amount of resources needed for infrastructure projects around the world.
