When Covid struck in 2020 there was an urgent need for research that would help the world overcome the pandemic. But it was also vital that research funds were spent wisely, only supporting the most robust and ethical research.
Reader in Bioethics at the University of Portsmouth, Dr Simon Kolstoe has spent years studying the ethics of research.
He is chair of research ethics committees for three UK government departments: the NHS Fast Track research ethics committee looking at clinical trials, the UK Health Security Agency's Research Ethics and Governance Group looking at Public Health Interventions, and the Ministry of Defence Research Ethics Committee.
