Residents provide valuable feedback for Mount Louisa Masterplan

Townsville City Council will undertake a review of plans for the future of Mount Louisa, with the completion of community engagement for the Mount Louisa Open Space Masterplan.

The Mount Louisa Open Space Masterplan aims to transform the area into an activity and recreation hub. The first stage includes a viewing platform, walking tracks and carparking.

The public consultation period ran from 15 March and was extended until 10 May – and included a Community Information Breakfast and several community meetings in the surrounding suburbs.

A total of 290 submissions providing feedback were received during the engagement period.

Townsville Mayor Jenny Hill said feedback from the public was crucial to the success of the plan and that Council will be revising details of the project before presenting a revised masterplan.

"It's been exciting to work with the community during the consultation period", Cr Hill said.

"People have made it clear they are very keen to see the full potential of Mount Louisa unlocked; however, we need to ensure this has minimal impact on existing residential areas."

Division 1 Councillor Margie Ryder said Council is pleased with the response from the public.

"This a major project that will ease the pressure on Castle Hill – and it is great to see almost 300 people came forward to have their say during the engagement period," Cr Ryder said.

Division 5 Councillor Russ Cook said Mount Louisa will be a key destination in the city.

"Our vision is to create an open space that complements and enhances the suburbs surrounding Mount Louisa, as we have a clear understanding of what residents are hoping to see," Cr Cook said.

Division 7 Councillor Kurt Rehbein said Council listened to feedback from local residents.

"Council staff have had a number of onsite discussions with residents and interested parties and this feedback will now directly input into our revised plans," Cr Rehbein said.

Division 8 Maurie Soars said the Open Space Masterplan is an important part of Townsville's future.

"We've made a commitment to provide upgraded facilities and world-class experiences in the city and the suburbs – this is a major part of our Townsville 2020 vision," Cr Soars said.

Council will present a revised Mount Louisa Open Space Masterplan in June.
