Residents reminded to take up Pet Program before closing date

Rockhampton Regional Council is reminding residents to take full advantage of a pet program available throughout the Region until the end of next month.

"Vac and Chip" is a collaboration between Council, Paws For A Purpose (PFAP), and two local vets and aims to help local residents keep their canines happy and healthy at lower than normal costs.

Councillor for Planning and Regulation, Ellen Smith, said the program offers eligible residents $15 vaccinations and $10 microchipping for their dogs at participating vets.

"Vaccinations and microchipping are a big part of responsible pet ownership and help ensure your four legged friends stay safe and well," Cr Smith said.

"We understand however that the fees involved in doing this can be hard to cover at times.

"The Vac and Chip Program dramatically cuts costs, and I really want to encourage all eligible residents to take up this opportunity before it closes next month.

"The vaccinations offered through this program help to protect your dog against parvovirus and would normally cost over $100. Puppies need three of those vaccinations in their first four months, plus a booster every year from thereafter – so the subsidies here are huge.

"Microchipping is an additional cost to that, but through the program is offered to residents at $10."

Cr Smith said this marks the third year the program has been rolled out in the Region and is something Council is proud to be a part of.

"I want to thank Pets For A Purpose for teaming up with us again, as well as local vet clinics - Alma Street Veterinary Hospital and Capricorn Veterinary Clinic - for getting on board.

"Programs like this make a huge difference to pet owners and our Region's pets."
