Residents Urged To Keep Colour Bin Sorting On Track

Ararat Rural City Council is reminding residents to stick to the colour bin plan after a noticeable increase in incorrectly sorted household waste has led to more contamination, particularly in green bins.

The council collects green waste from the community to mulch and produce compost, but when plastics, general rubbish or glass end up in green bins, that whole load must be sent to landfill instead of being put to good use.

Council urges everyone to remember the simple colour code: purple is for glass only, green is for green waste, red is for general rubbish, and yellow is for recycling.

When householders stick to the plan, it keeps recycling systems working smoothly and helps Ararat continue its strong record for sustainability.

Ararat Rural City Council CEO Dr Tim Harrison said, "We all want the best outcomes for the environment, but right now, a few misplaced items can spoil the efforts of everyone in our community. If we each take just a moment to double-check what goes in which bin, we reduce landfill, protect natural resources and support fantastic local composting projects. Let's work together to keep Ararat's bins sorted, so good intentions don't go to waste."

Council thanks residents for their ongoing commitment to effective waste management. Keeping bins sorted by colour helps keep composting and recycling functioning well, paving the way for a stronger future for Ararat.
