Residents urged to paws and find a new pet

Townsville animal lovers are being encouraged to adopt a new furry friend at the Animal Shelter this weekend.

Dogs and cats at the Council-run Shelter will be half-price and people will have more opp-paw-tunities to find a new friend for a discount on Saturday and Sunday.

Community Health and Environment Committee Chair Cr Ann-Maree Greaney said the Animal Shelter has the paw-fect pet for everyone.

"We have a great mix to pick from – we have 25 dogs and puppies and 65 purr-fect cats and kittens who are keen to start their news lives in the city or the suburbs," Cr Greaney said.

"All the animals at the Animal Shelter have been microchipped, desexed, registered and vaccinated.

"They're ready to settle into their new homes – we have looked after the basics but potential owners need to remember they are taking on a long-term commitment.

"These cats and dogs need good homes so anyone looking to adopt a pet needs to make sure their property is pet-friendly."

The Animal Shelter is open from 9:30am to 2pm on Saturday and Sunday.
