City of Ryde Mayor Trenton Brown and Ryde Police Area Superintendent Vince Hole are urging residents to take precautions to prevent parcel theft and secure their possessions, especially as online shopping continues to grow in popularity.
With more people opting for home deliveries, there is an increased risk of theft—particularly in unit complexes where parcels are often left unattended in foyers and concierge areas.
Mayor Brown highlighted the importance of vigilance, stating, "It's frustrating and disappointing when a much-anticipated package goes missing. By taking a few simple precautions, residents can reduce the risk of parcel theft and better protect their belongings."
Superintendent Vince Hole reinforced the message, adding, "Parcel theft is an opportunistic crime, and prevention is key. We encourage everyone to take steps to ensure their deliveries are received safely and stored securely."
To help safeguard your shopping, consider the following crime prevention tips:
- Be aware of your delivery schedule—track your order and ensure it isn't left unattended for long periods.
- Consider using a Post Office or a secure collection point for your deliveries.
- Check with your strata committee about improving security measures, such as securing building access.
- Store parcels and valuables in a safe location—not in parking areas or storage cages, which can also be vulnerable to theft.
- Consider fitting security cameras.
If you witness suspicious behaviour or experience theft, report it to your local Police station Crime Stoppers by calling 1800 333 000.
