The Australian Government is investing $600,000 to help restore and protect saltmarsh and riparian habitats on the NSW South Coast.
The project will improve at least 60 hectares of coastal saltmarsh and associated threatened ecological communities.
Work will take place across 3 key locations:
- Clyde River at Batemans Bay
- Burrill Lake
- Lake Illawarra
Saltmarshes are important for fish, birds and crustaceans. They also help clean the water, stop erosion and keep coastal areas healthy.
The project, to be delivered by OzFish, will include:
- removing weeds
- planting native species
- checking ecosystem health
- running community workshops and events.
At least 100 OzFish members and volunteers will take part in the project, which will:
enhance restoration outcomes
strengthen local understanding of saltmarsh ecology
encourage ongoing community stewardship of the local environment.
The funding comes from the Australian Government's Local Environmental Projects Program. This program supports community projects that protect and improve the environment.
