Restoring Trust: Environment Protection Authority Amendment Bill

The Territory Labor Government is continuing to protect our natural environment after passing legislation that will see the Governments continued implementation of its environmental reform agenda.

The amendments will improve the governance of the NT EPA and give it the new responsibility of assurance monitor to undertake systemic reviews of the Territorys environmental management system.

The amendments also introduce changes that will provide greater flexibility in the NT EPA membership, and allow Ministers to seek the Authoritys advice on a range of specific proposals and plans targeting improved environmental management and protection. This change directly supports the implementation of the Governments commitments to improve regulatory processes associated with the management of onshore oil and gas activities, including hydraulic fracturing.

In addition, a new requirement for the NT EPA to prepare a Statement of Intent at least every two years outlining how the NT EPA will perform in its functions and powers was also passed. The Statement of Intent will be tabled in the Legislative Assembly, increasing transparency and public accountability for all Territorians.

This Government promised to base environmental decisions on science and will continue to do this, unlike the previous CLP Government who ignored science and were careless with the management of the Territorys environment and natural resources.

As noted by Minister for Environment and Natural Resources, Eva Lawler:

The Territorys natural environment is one of our best assets and a huge part of what makes living here so special. Protecting the environment creates jobs, and good environmental policy is smart economic policy.

This amended legislation will strengthen governance and accountability for environmental decisions, support local jobs, and provide greater certainty for businesses and community.
