After significant careers detecting drugs and disrupting crime, Police Dogs Aggie, Una and Bernie are retiring from Tasmania Police.
"In a milestone moment, Police Dogs Aggie, Una and Bernie will take off their police jackets for the last time this month and retire from service with Tasmania Police," said Assistant Commissioner Rob Blackwood.
"With 22 years of combined service (150 in dog years), 8 year-old Aggie, and 9-year-old Una and Bernie, have conducted more than 2,800 drug searches and detected in excess of 45 million dollars' worth of drugs in our community.
"The expert skills of Police Dogs Aggie, Una and Bernie have made a significant contribution to drug detection in Tasmania – screening mail, baggage, people, vehicles, buildings, and freight for the scent of illicit drugs such as cannabis, cocaine and amphetamines.
"Our Police Dogs are highly valued and dearly loved members of our service, and it's fitting Aggie, Una and Bernie are each presented with a Commissioner's Certificate of Appreciation at a retirement gathering today," said Assistant Commissioner Blackwood.
"Drug detection work is very physical for dogs, and Aggie, Una and Bernie have made a significant contribution to preventing and detecting drug-related crime in our community.
"Aggie, Una and Bernie have done our service proud, and on behalf of Tasmania Police, I hope they all enjoy many relaxing days in their forever homes."
Into retirement Una will remain with her current handler, Bernie will remain with his current handler with plans to transition him to a welfare dog for Tasmania Police, and Aggie has been adopted by a currently service police officer and their family.
