MEDIA RELEASE

Statement by Retirement Living Council Executive Director Daniel Gannon on Aveo class action settlement

Australia's retirement living industry is pleased to see the case resolved and acknowledge the expression of regret by law firm Levitt Robinson for any stress and anxiety it may have caused.

There is no doubt that the television expose that sparked the case six years ago, indeed made for tough viewing.

The reputation of our industry suffered as a result.

But as a sector, we chose to acknowledge the issues, front up and address them.

In the last six years the Retirement Living Council has introduced a Code of Conduct and produced best practice guidance with the industry and for the industry.

We have acknowledged mistakes, learned from them, and been united in our positive response as we continue to work with governments on strengthening this sector.

The industry and the hardworking people who work in the 2,500 retirement villages across the country is better for that work, and in turn, is also better placed to provide quality and age-friendly housing for older Australians.

As governments all around Australia tackle our country's housing crisis, we encourage leaders to recognise the critical role retirement living can play in supplying homes for older Australians that is affordable and suits their unique needs.

And in doing so, we want those leaders to know that our sector is well governed and well positioned to play that role, while also striving for continuous improvement.
