Every October, people across Australia join Buy Nothing New Month, a global movement that challenges us to rethink how we consume and embrace more sustainable, creative and community-minded alternatives.
By choosing to borrow, mend, swap or buy second-hand instead of buying brand new, we can reduce our environmental impact, save money and support a truly circular economy.
Reuse, repair and reconnect locally
This October, we're inviting Yarra residents to explore the many ways to participate while supporting our local businesses.
Get to know your local repairers, menders and second-hand stores
Yarra is home to a thriving network of small businesses that help keep items in circulation and out of landfill, from cobblers and clothing menders to op shops and vintage stores. Check out our Circular Economy map to find local repair cafés, tailors, share libraries and more.
Take the pledge
Commit to a month of mindful consumption by taking the Buy Nothing New Month pledge. You'll receive tips, inspiration and resources to help you get started.
Get involved
Host a clothes swap, organise an op shop tour with friends, or simply challenge yourself to go without buying anything new for the month (essential items excluded). Every action counts and inspires others to do the same.
Why it matters
The average Australian sends 23 kilograms of textiles to landfill every year. That is the equivalent of 56 items of clothing per person. By repairing, sharing and reusing, we can reduce waste and carbon emissions while supporting a more resourceful, connected community.
Let's rethink what we consume and what we truly need.
