An independent Planning Panel appointed by the Victorian Minister for Planning has concluded its review of future planning for the growth of Paynesville and Eagle Point.
Planning Scheme amendments prepared by East Gippsland Shire Council to accommodate future development were referred to the Planning Panel following public consultation. The amendments provide a long-term framework to plan for much-needed housing, community infrastructure and environmental protection.
An eight-day Planning Panels Victoria hearing considered submissions from Council, major landowners and community representatives.
East Gippsland Shire Mayor Cr John White said this is an important step that enables community and expert views on the proposed amendments to be fully considered by the independent panel, ensuring the planning frameworks for each town reflect future community needs.
For Paynesville, the review has considered the coordinated delivery of new housing and infrastructure to meet the needs of a growing population, while maintaining the special character and environmental values of the town and the Gippsland Lakes. The Eagle Point plan aims to support minor growth, while maintaining the unique village character.
"Council has maintained a strong position on behalf of the community that the future development of the towns needs to be carefully managed, allowing for growth that will meet future community needs and create economic prosperity, while protecting the important qualities of our coastal towns that are highly valued by residents," John said.
"The Planning Panel process has enabled a range of views to be considered by an independent umpire through a transparent public process."
The Planning Panel now has 30 business days to prepare a report and make recommendations which will then be considered by Council. The final decision on the amendments will be made by the Minister for Planning, with further community consultation will help to shape the detail of future housing and infrastructure development.
