Review Of NGER Method 2 For Open-cut Coal Mines

Dept of Climate Change, Energy, Environment & Water

We have released the terms of reference for the review of the National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting (NGER) scheme Method 2 for open-cut coal mines.

Stakeholders use Method 2 for estimating fugitive greenhouse gas emissions from open-cut coal mines in Australia. We want to ensure the method remains:

  • fit for purpose
  • reflects the most up to date science, data, technologies and practices.

This review progresses implementation of the Australian Government's response to the 2023 Climate Change Authority review of the NGER Scheme.

The terms of reference set out the issues under review. Targeted stakeholder consultations and submissions received from the 2025 NGER scheme public consultation helped identify these issues.

Learn about the review's process and timing. We will also publish updates and details of the May 2026 public webinar on that page.
