RFNSW Backs Smart Move for Better Fuel Management

Road Freight NSW (RFNSW)

Peak body Road Freight NSW (RFNSW) says new measures introduced by the NSW Government for the trucking industry will improve freight efficiencies for operators and help preserve precious fuel across the State's supply chains.

As part of the 'National Fuel Security Plan', the Government will ease restrictions on truck operating hours, including reducing curfews and road limits, as well increasing road access for high-productivity freight vehicles, which carry heavier loads and use up to 31 per cent less diesel than standard B-doubles.

RFNSW CEO Simon O'Hara said the measures would help keep vital goods moving across NSW whilst reducing fuel use for truck operators, many of them small family-run businesses.

"This is a smart move by the Government — more freight, fewer trips, lower diesel use and a stronger supply chain when NSW needs it most.," he said.

"RFNSW has maintained that better access for bigger and longer freight vehicles means a more resilient network and less wasted fuel across the freight task. These reforms recognise that if you want to keep shelves stocked and essential goods moving, you need a road network that allows freight to operate efficiently.

"From our perspective, high productivity freight vehicles are part of the answer when fuel is under pressure, like now. They carry more, do the job more efficiently and help keep essential goods moving to businesses, families and regional communities.

"Night operations, fewer curfews and better access for high productivity vehicles are practical reforms that should have strong support across the supply chain – more freight in fewer trips is exactly what NSW needs when fuel supply is under pressure. This is a good example of Government understanding that freight is essential infrastructure. If freight works better, the whole economy works better.

"Keeping Australia moving must remain the priority and that includes ensuring freight operators are supported to continue delivering for businesses, communities and households across NSW and beyond."
