Rider Charged: Traffic Offenses, Police Assault at Maitland

A motorbike rider will face court charged with traffic and assault offences following an incident at East Maitland last night.

About 11.30pm yesterday (Tuesday 23 December 2025), police were patrolling the New England Highway when they saw an unregistered motorbike at a service station.

Police stopped and approached the rider who attempted to start the motorcycle unsuccessfully.

The rider allegedly pushed the bike towards a police officer, striking the Senior Constable, before the rider allegedly ran from the scene.

The rider was arrested following a brief foot pursuit and the use of a Taser.

During an inspection of the motorbike, police established that the identification numbers had been removed.

The bike was seized and will undergo further examination.

The 19-year-old man was taken to Maitland Police Station where he was charged with drive motor vehicle during disqualification period, goods in personal custody suspected being stolen (m/v), and assault police officer in execution of duty without actual bodily harm.

He was granted strict conditional bail to appear before Maitland Local Court on Wednesday 14 January 2026.
