A new exhibition currently on show at Rockhampton Museum of Art (RMOA) will look at the state of Queensland through the eyes of a diverse assembly of artists.
State of the Art: Reimagining Queensland brings together 18 contemporary artists working in all artforms. The artists come from a variety of backgrounds and are either based in Queensland or have a strong connection to the state.
The exhibition is an introspective look at how the artists see Queensland. Through stories about people and places before and since European settlement, the exhibition aims to remind people who we are, where we come from and where we are going. It also looks at the relationship between Queensland's neighbouring states and countries.
The exhibition is expected to provide an individual experience for each visitor. The variety of works on display, as well as the overlapping themes and content being explored between artists and art works, will give each exhibition goer opportunities to find something they can personally connect with.
Over 70 works will be on display, both large and small, including photographs, paintings, sculptures and digital media works, some of which have been created especially for this exhibition and will be on display for the first time.
Curated by RMOA, the exhibition features the work of James Bourbon, Darren Blackman, Rachel Burke, Ruth Cho, Jamie Congdon, Ernest Garrett, Naomi Hobson, Seinileva Huakau, Tara Lewis, Noel McKenna, Wendy Mocke, Sally Molloy, Glen O'Malley, Teho Ropeyarn, Joel Sam, Clare Jaque Vasquez, Judy Watson, and Keemon Williams.
Rockhampton Regional Council Communities, Arts and Heritage spokesperson Cr Drew Wickerson said: "This exhibition is a great opportunity for people to have a look at the work of some of the most notable established and emerging artists in Queensland today.
"Queensland has a lot of artists that are at the forefront of contemporary visual arts and I am very pleased that our own RMOA staff have curated this exhibition for locals and visitors to enjoy," he said.
State of the Art: Reimagining Queensland is now on display at RMOA, 220 Quay Street, Rockhampton until 12 October. Admission to the exhibition is free.
