The Rockhampton Region Local Disaster Management Group (LDMG) has activated the 'Lean Forward' phase following the Bureau of Meteorology's moderate flood warning for the Fitzroy River.
The warning issued today indicates potential impacts at Yaamba from the weekend and in Rockhampton from early next week.
LDMG Chair and Rockhampton Region Mayor Tony Williams said the Lean Forward phase signals heightened readiness ahead of possible flooding.
"Lean Forward means our teams, resources and emergency coordination centres are on standby. We are prepared, and ready to be activated if and when required," Mayor Williams said.
"It is still too early to give exact prediction figures; however, we are closely monitoring the system and river catchments across the region and will continue refining forecasts as upstream peaks move through.
"We will keep the community updated as soon as we have clearer information on predicted peak heights, inundation areas and preparation details.
"In the interim, residents might notice increased Council activity as we prepare for potential impacts.
"These steps are precautionary and designed to ensure we can respond quickly if needed – as part of our disaster management planning."
Heavy rainfall associated with ex‑Tropical Cyclone Koji has caused rapid rises across the Connors, Isaac, Mackenzie and Theresa Creek catchments, contributing to the flood warning for the Fitzroy River.
"While the rain is easing, floodwaters from the north are now moving downstream," Mayor Williams said.
"Minor flooding is occurring at Yaamba, with small rises at Rockhampton prompting the closure of the Archer and Derby Streets car parks.
"Further rises are expected later this week as flows from the Mackenzie River arrive.
"We expect minor flooding may begin at Yaamba from Friday and in Rockhampton from overnight Sunday into Monday, increasing to moderate flooding from Tuesday."
Residents are urged to stay informed and follow official advice as conditions evolve.
