The Rockhampton Region Local Disaster Management Group (LDMG) is urging residents in low-lying areas to prepare for isolation from flooding.
The Bureau of Meteorology is predicting the Fitzroy River will rise above the minor flood level from Sunday afternoon, resulting in the closure of some local roads.
Suburbs expected to be impacted include Depot Hill, Port Curtis, Fairy Bower, Lakes Creek, Koongal, Berserker, Park Avenue and Pink Lily.
The river is predicted to reach the moderate level of 7.5 metres on Monday and peak around 8.00 meters on Tuesday night.
LDMG Chair and Rockhampton Region Mayor Tony Williams is encouraging residents in those impacted areas to decide whether to stay at home or make alternative arrangements.
"With the Fitzroy River rising, now is the time for people to stop and think about what that could mean for them and their family," Mayor Williams said.
"Once floodwater reaches certain levels, evacuation routes can be cut off very quickly, and people may find themselves isolated until the water recedes.
"We're asking residents to make a clear decision early, whether they plan to stay in their homes or make alternative arrangements, and to act on that decision before conditions worsen.
"If you're staying, please be prepared. Have enough food, drinking water, medication, and essential supplies to last at least five days.
"Families should also talk through their plans together. Make sure children are with you or with a trusted adult, and if you have pets that you're protecting them too.
"People should also prepare for the possibility of power outages by charging mobile phones and essential devices now."
To help households get ready, the LDMG recommends the following five steps:
- Step 1 – Understand your risk
- Step 2 – Make a plan
- Step 3 – Pack Supplies
- Step 4 – Prepare your home
- Step 5 – Protect your pet
"These are sensible, practical steps that help keep people safe. Preparing early gives residents the best chance to ride out this event safely," Mayor Williams said.
Mayor Williams said the "If it's flooded, forget it" messaging was crucial during this time.
"Staying out of floodwater is absolutely critical. It's dangerous, unpredictable, and puts lives at risk," Mayor Williams said.
The LDMG remains in Stand Up phase, with resources mobilised, personnel activated and operational activities underway.
Council continues to monitor conditions closely and will provide further updates as new information becomes available.
