Rockliff silent on Brighton High School site

Tasmanian Labor
  • Consultation finished in August 2019
  • Government's own document promised to reveal the site by the end of 2019*
  • Community deserves answers and certainty
  • Questions need to be asked why Jeremy Rockliff is yet to make a decision about the site of the proposed Brighton High School.

The Government's community consultation finished on 26 August 2019 but they have been silent on the site since then.

Shadow Minister for Education and Early Years, Josh Willie, said the project remains shrouded with uncertainty and the community deserves to know what is going on.

"It's time Jeremy Rockliff made a decision in the best interests of the Brighton community," Mr Willie said.

"This has been a divisive issue locally and it's time the Government showed some leadership to bring the community back together.

"The Liberals promised Tasmanians the site would be revealed at the end of 2019* - so why the delay?

"The community consultation favoured a privately owned site - so does the $30 million allocated to the project include funding for land acquisition?

"If the Government is going to acquire private land for the site, how will that affect the project's budget? Will anything be sacrificed as a result?

"The local community wants answers - if the Government can't answer these questions then people have every right to ask if this is just another unfunded election promise."
