The Time Warp has taken on new meaning in Rockhampton, with the 2026 local production of The Rocky Horror Show officially breaking three long‑standing Pilbeam Theatre records, including the theatre's all‑time attendance record.

Across eight electrifying performances in March, a total of 7,167 people flocked to the Pilbeam Theatre to become the largest audience ever recorded in the venue's 47‑year history.

The previous record was set in April-May 1982 by a touring commercial production of The Rocky Horror Show, which drew 6,889 patrons over nine performances. Despite strong challengers from blockbuster Council productions such as Mamma Mia! and Mary Poppins, that benchmark had remained untouched for more than four decades, until now.

Rockhampton Regional Council Communities, Culture and Heritage spokesperson Councillor Drew Wickerson said the milestone reflects the region's passion for homegrown performance.

"I know we've been saying #RockyDoesRocky, but perhaps the hashtag should now be #RockyLovesRocky," Cr Wickerson said.

"To say that Rocky audiences are Rocky Horror fans would be an understatement. They've turned out in droves to support this sensational local production, breaking a record that has stood since 1982."

"This achievement is a testament to our vibrant arts community and the incredible talent we have here. It's exactly why Council invests in major musical theatre projects that create opportunities, build skills, and bring people together. Seeing the community embrace the show with such enthusiasm is enormously rewarding."

The 2026 production of The Rocky Horror Show broke records for:

  • Highest Attended Performance in Pilbeam Theatre History with 7,167 attendees - previously held by commercial production of Rocky Horror in 1982 with 6,889
  • Highest Attended Council Community Musical Production - previously held by 'Mary Poppins' in 2016 with 6,859 Pax
  • Highest Grossing Council Community Musical Production - previously held by 'Wicked' in 2017

Produced by Rockhampton Regional Council, the production was helmed by local Director Amanda Hock, brought to life by a talented cast of local performers and musicians, and supported by outstanding local production, wardrobe, props and technical crews.
