Griffith Regional Art Gallery's latest exhibition "Covered in Roses/Covered in Ashes" features exquisite textile-based artwork from Wagga-based artist Mary Coughlan. The exhibition is an extraordinary and intimate exploration of the artist's own experience of childhood sexual assault and its aftermath. Trained as both an artist and a social worker, Mary Coughlan has spent a lifetime processing trauma through her art practice.

In her use of domestic needlework, tapestry, quilting and applique Ms Coughlan subverts traditional readings of female domestic arts. Taken as a whole, these artworks trace and situate her personal story as one of abuse, shame and trauma, yet underlying is a steely determination - not to be silenced.

Gallery co-ordinator Melanie Toscan said "Mary's artworks speak a message of her own personal journey, where she has processed her trauma through meticulously creating intricate textile-based works. The content is thought provoking, but also quite extraordinary in the skill level of her practice'.

We understand that some of the topics addressed in the art may be distressing for some individuals and encourage you to consider whether it is best for you to view the exhibition. Parental guidance is recommended for young people under 18 years.
