Royal Hobart Hospital ED Expansion on Track

Tasmanian Government

The Tasmanian Government is getting on with the job of delivering the $130 million Royal Hobart Hospital (RHH) Emergency Department (ED) Expansion.

Minister for Health, Mental Health and Wellbeing, Bridget Archer, said the project is progressively building the modern emergency care capacity southern Tasmanians need.

"We are delivering this major expansion in carefully planned stages, while ensuring the hospital remains open and continues providing vital care to Tasmanians every day," Minister Archer said.

In 2023, the first stage of the ED expansion delivered a new Short Stay Unit and 28 additional treatment points.

Further improvements were delivered in late 2024, including upgraded staff amenities, office space and training facilities for ED clinicians and support staff.

"These are practical improvements that make a real difference for the people who provide care and the Tasmanians who rely on it," Minister Archer said.

"The phase of works currently underway will deliver a state-of-the-art ED across three levels, increasing capacity to 120 treatment points, including procedure rooms, CT, X-ray and ultrasound facilities, a dedicated paediatric zone, and waiting areas for children and people experiencing mental health distress.

"Upgrading a working hospital is complex, and we thank patients, visitors, staff, and the community for their patience as this important work continues.

"Through our Government's 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania's Future, we're delivering an even better health system across our state."
