Rubbish and recyclables research

We are doing research to understand how our community is sorting out recyclables and waste in their bins.

Last year 13.3% of kerbside recyclables and 3% of green waste was contaminated in Knox. Contamination causes problems at the waste sorting centre and can lead to entire truckloads of contaminated recyclables going to landfill.

For the waste management system to work, waste needs to be placed in the corresponding bin.

Over the next few months, we are randomly selecting kerbside bins to see how rubbish, recyclables and green waste are getting separated.

You may find a tag on your bin and a postcard in your letterbox to let you know that your bin has been part of our research.

If contamination is found, we may not able to collect that bin on the day. Contaminated items will be listed on the tag placed on the bin. The listed items will need to be removed before the next bin collection day. If there are concerns or issues, please call Customer Service on 9298 8000.

The research will conclude in July 2022.
