OSCE Arbitration Court President Addresses Permanent Council

OSCE

Andreas Zimmermann , President of the OSCE Court of Conciliation and Arbitration, addressed the OSCE Permanent Council in Vienna on the Court's activities over the past year on 1 October.

He presented the Court's two mechanisms for the peaceful settlement of disputes between States: conciliation is compulsory for all States parties by virtue of ratification, and arbitration requires the consent of the States concerned.

Sweden, as depositary of the 1992 Stockholm Convention on Conciliation and Arbitration within the OSCE, delivered a statement in support of the Court on behalf of a large group of States parties.

President Zimmermann also presented the Court as part of the OSCE's toolbox for preventive diplomacy to OSCE Secretary General Feridun H. Sinirlioğlu.

Meeting with the heads of several OSCE delegations, the President discussed the role the Court can play in conciliation and the types of disputes that could be brought before it.

The Court is based in Geneva. Its services remain open, on a voluntary basis, to all OSCE participating States.
