Police encourage passionate fans to cheer on their heroes in the Rugby League World Cup safely - and respectfully.
Celebrations and activities need to be lawful and undertaken with consideration for others in the community: don't let your teams down with irresponsible actions.
While the majority of supporters are enthusiastic and respectful, Superintendent Riki Whiu, Director - Auckland Partnerships, says Police have previously seen behaviours which put people and other road users at risk, particularly where vehicles are involved.
"High-risk driving behaviours, including riding on top of vehicles or on bonnets, and hanging out of windows, can have serious consequences. Drivers are responsible for their passengers and their actions.
"Proudly showcase your support with flags outside your vehicle, while ensuring all passengers remain safely inside.
"Backing your team and country should not compromise anyone's safety."
Police will have a presence in parts of Auckland, Christchurch, and Wellington during the tournament.
It is important that fans do not block streets or stop traffic.
Superintendent Whiu says doing so prevents access for vital emergency services, while also impacting members of the public.
"We want to minimise disruption and ensure celebrations can be enjoyed safely by everyone.
"Look after each other and those around you, whether you're inside or outside of a vehicle."
Police are reminding fans of tips to keep themselves safe, and lawful:
- Make sure your vehicle has a current warrant of fitness and registration
- Obey all road rules
- Ensure your driver's view is not obstructed
- Be extra careful driving in congested traffic
- Intoxicated people are a risk to themselves and others, keep them safe or send them home
Police will be visible throughout the tournament to ensure everyone plays by the rules.
