There will be several changes to South Australia's electoral boundaries at the next federal election, including a change to one electorate name.
Electorate boundaries
The proposed boundaries for South Australia that were outlined in March have largely been adopted.
- Barker gains part of Alexandrina Council and the suburbs of Callington and Kanmantoo from Mayo
- Boothby gains the remainder of the City of Mitcham from Mayo
- Makin gains part of the City of Salisbury south of the Little Para River from Spence
The following boundaries originally set to move will now remain unchanged:
- The boundaries between Kingston and Mayo
- The boundaries between Grey (O'Donoghue) and Spence
Electoral Commissioner Jeff Pope said the changes would see approximately 24,000 people move electorates, just under two per cent of the enrolled population.
"These changes are an important measure for maintaining balance and equal representation across South Australia's electorates," Mr Pope said.
"This was particularly the case for Mayo, which has shrunk in size to account for its growing population."
Mr Pope also said the announcement reflected community feedback provided to the original proposal.
"A significant number of submissions disagreed with the proposal to move several suburbs from Spence into Grey, due to their urban communities not fitting the regional nature of Grey."
"There was general agreement from local communities that the suburbs of Aberfoyle Park, Chandlers Hill and Happy Valley were better suited to remain in Kingston than Mayo."
"After hearing this feedback, the decision was made to retain those suburbs in their current electorates."
Electorate names
The proposal to rename the electorate of Grey to O'Donoghue has been confirmed.
More than 300 submissions were received in relation to this proposed name change with the augmented Electoral Commission acknowledging that many submissions opposed a change. While taking all submissions into consideration, the augmented Electoral Commission determined Sir George Grey had been honoured appropriately and that it was time to honour an outstanding Australian.
Dr Lowitja O'Donoghue was the first Indigenous nurse at the Royal Adelaide Hospital and first woman to hold a position of Regional Director in a federal government department. She also worked in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health advocacy and was a prominent First Nations leader in the 20th and 21st centuries.
Alongside her achievements, Dr O'Donoghue's strong connection to the APY Lands within the electorate provided strong reasoning to rename the electorate in her honour.
No other changes to South Australian federal electorate names will occur as a result of this redistribution process.
