Safer Communities: New CCTV cameras for Karama Shopping Plaza

The Territory LaborGovernment continues to invest in crime fighting technology with Minister forPolice, Nicole Manison, and Member for Karama, Ngaree Ah Kit, today announcingthe installation of permanent CCTV cameras around the Karama Shopping Plaza.

Since 2016, almost 400 extraCCTV cameras have been installed across the Territory and 17 additional mobileCCTV units have been deployed to give ourpolice more eyes to detect and deter crime.

That record CCTV rollout willcontinue with 19 new cameras to be installed at Karama Shopping Plaza and willinclude audio capability, allowing operators to send messages or instructionsto individuals.

The installation of thecameras will help reduce crime and anti-social behaviour, making the centre asafer and more enjoyable place to visit.

The cameras will feed backinto the City Safe CCTV System at the Joint Emergency Services CommunicationsCentre which operates 24/7.

When we came to governmentthere were 190 CCTV cameras in the Territory, now there are almost 600. This ismore resources to help police cut crime.

CCTV is proven to help stopcrime before it happens, moderate an individuals behaviour and assist in courtproceedings.

The TerritoryLabor Government is also on track to delivering the promised 120 extra Policeofficers something the CLP promised but failed to deliver for Territorians.

As local member I havefought hard to get these CCTV cameras installed because they will make a bigdifference for the community.

These cameras will keeplocals safe and help catch anyone doing the wrong thing.

Police already do an amazingjob in our community, but these 19 cameras will provide another level ofsupport here in Karama.
