The Marshall Government has revealed funding for three black spot intersections amid today's launch of updated car safety ratings for 2019/20.
South Australians thinking about purchasing a pre-loved car are being urged to check its Used Car Safety Rating (UCSR) which provides a measure of how well each vehicle protects its driver from death or serious injury in a crash.
The ratings were created by the RAA using records from over 8 million vehicles involved in police-reported road crashes.
The vast majority of vehicles rated were manufactured from 2006 onwards, and many are available second-hand for under $10,000.
Three black spots where 13 serious injuries have occurred since 2013, including Paracombe Road in the Adelaide Hills, will also be upgraded as part of the 2019/20 Marshall Government funded Black Spot Program to improve safety for motorists.
Minister for Police, Correctional Services and Emergency Services Corey Wingard said: "We have committed more than a billion dollars to upgrading our roads and have come down hard on reckless drivers by increasing fines for distraction and medium to high-level speeding."
"However, you do not have to be at fault to be in an accident - so it is important to check the car safety ratings so that if the unthinkable happens you have the best possible protection from the vehicle you drive."
Liberal Member for Newland Richard Harvey said road safety in the Adelaide Hills was a very important issue for his constituents.
"I know that they will be very pleased that the Marshall Liberal Government is delivering this upgrade of Paracombe Road," Mr Harvey said.
"Not only will this upgrade improve safety for locals travelling to and from the Hills, it will, importantly, improve safety for visitors who may be unfamiliar with the winding roads that lead to some of our State's hidden gems."
The $1 million worth of projects will improve road safety with additional signage and guard fences, road reconstruction, upgraded pedestrian facilities and improved sight lines.
The State Government is contributing two-thirds of the cost of each project, with the relevant council contributing the remaining one-third.
The three projects are:
• Morgan Road, between Ironbank Road and Scott Creek Road at Ironbank - Adelaide Hills Council ($188,000)
o Installation of chevron alignment markers (large black and yellow arrow signs), curve advisory signs and guard fence
o Nominated as a result of four crashes causing injuries for the period 2013-2017.
• Paracombe Road for 1km length from Lower North East Rd at Paracombe - Adelaide Hills Council ($580,000)
o Road reconstruction and widening on curves to improve safety.
o Upgrading existing safety barriers to provide protection for motorcyclists
o Provision of signs and edge lines to improve delineation
o Nominated as a result of five crashes causing injuries for the period 2013-2017.
• Semaphore Road and Woolnough Road Intersection at Semaphore - City of Port Adelaide Enfield ($230,000)
o Installing a raised intersection platform at Woolnough Road to reduce vehicle speed and improve sight lines
o Installing seagull island along Semaphore Road
o Improving pedestrian facilities
o Nominated as a result of four crashes causing injuries for the period 2013-2017.
Earlier this year 13 sites were funded for upgrade as part of the Federal Government's National Black Spot funding.
Nominations unsuccessful for the National Black Spot Program were considered for funding by the Liberal State Government program.
