Salt lamp, hammer used in choking assault near Wollongong

A woman has been charged with multiple offences after she allegedly assaulted another woman near Wollongong overnight.

About 10pm yesterday (Thursday 24 October 2019), a 45-year-old woman attended the home of a 42-year-old woman on Popes Road, Woonona.

Police allege the 45-year-old woman demanded a funds transfer of a significant sum from the other woman – who is known to her - before punching and kicking her in the face and legs.

The older woman then allegedly continued to assault the other woman with a salt lamp and a hammer, before attempting to strangle her with a lamp cord and hitting her over the head with a lamp.

The woman then allegedly wrapped tape around her throat prior to knocking her unconscious with a blow to the head. The woman allegedly woke with tape wrapped around her wrists.

Police were called by neighbours and attended the unit, where a crime scene was established.

A 42-year-old woman was taken to Wollongong Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries to her head, face and limbs.

The 45-year-old woman was arrested and taken to Wollongong Police Station, where she was later charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm, choke with intent, armed with intent and detain for advantage.

She was refused bail and is due to face Wollongong Local Court today (Friday 25 October 2019).
