will host a Media Event and Launch for the Salvos Sleep Out 2020 on August 07, 2020, at 10 am at the Hotel Grand Chancellor, Davey Street.
The launch event will highlight the need for the ‘Sleep Out’ event, encourage people to register and introduce Haig Rice from Spidertech who will be “Sleeping Out” suspended from the side of the Hotel Grand Chancellor on September 3 (see artist’s impression below).
The annual Salvos Sleep Out event will be held this year on Thursday, September 3, 2020. This year’s fundraising goal is $50,000, which will help people experiencing homelessness by keeping Hobart’s Street 2 Home Outreach Program running for another year.
Street 2 Home is entirely funded by The Salvation Army with the support from those that ‘sleep out’ each year. It is the only primary outreach service on the streets and in the parks ensuring the welfare of people experiencing homelessness and connecting them to relevant supports.
In most years, the Salvos Sleep Out is the one night of discomfort we need to experience, sleeping outdoors on Davey Street during the late winter. This year the event is going online due to COVID-19 restrictions, which provides a real opportunity for more people to become involved as there will be no limits in numbers or age restrictions for younger participants.
Participants are encouraged to ‘sleep out’ as couch surfers, in a tent, in their car, or wherever they think they can generate sponsors and tune in to the live webcast on the night. Over the course of the evening on September 3, they can virtually visit homelessness services, check in on Haig as he is suspended by the Hotel Grand Chancellor, listen to testimonies from people with a lived experience and interact with a panel of guests discussing the key issues around homelessness.
This year’s panel includes the Lord Mayor of Hobart, Councillor Anna Reynolds, Hon Meg Webb MLC, Pattie Chugg, CEO of Shelter Tas, and Don McCrae from The Salvation Army.
