Attorney-General and Minister for Justice Yvette D'Ath has announced Mr Sandy (Gavin Alexander) Thompson QC as Queensland's new Solicitor-General.
A former President of the Bar Association Queensland, Mr Thompson is a respected member of the profession and will bring more than three decades of experience to his new role serving the people of Queensland.
Mr Thompson is a distinguished Brisbane senior barrister with extensive legal experience including commercial, litigation, arbitration and government representation.
He was called to the bar in 1983 and was appointed Senior Counsel in 1998.
Mr Thompson has appeared in the Privy Council in London on two occasions, in the High Court of Australia, the Federal Court of Australia, the Supreme Courts of Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, Western Australia and the Northern Territory.
He is currently engaged on behalf of the State of Queensland in the 2011 floods class action.
Mr Thompson will take over the role from Mr Peter Dunning QC who has completed a five-year term of distinguished service.
"I thank Mr Dunning for his hard work, legal insight and dedication to service during his time as Solicitor-General," Mrs D'Ath said.
"Mr Dunning has been reliable, trustworthy and a safe pair of hands in providing advice on a range of complex and challenging matters.
"I wish him well for the future."
Queensland's Solicitor-General is the state's second law officer and provides expert legal advice to the Attorney-General and the Crown.
The Solicitor-General must be a barrister of at least 10 years' standing and is appointed for a term of five years under the Solicitor-General Act 1985.
