The Rockhampton CBD will have a new sound to it this weekend with the addition of live music in East Street.

Saturday Sounds, an initiative of Advance Rockhampton, will see a different local artist play a 4-hour set each Saturday morning commencing this weekend on 24 April.

Initially, performers will be located outside Kern Arcade but the sounds will be heard up and down East Street.

Rockhampton Region Mayor Tony Williams said it's fantastic to see this CBD initiative creating a new mood on weekends.

"We want to offer locals more reasons to visit the CBD on a weekend, and with the buzz that live music brings, Saturday mornings have never looked better!" Mayor Williams said.

"Arrange a catch-up with a friend, grab a coffee, stroll the boutique shops, enjoy the delightful tunes from one of our fabulous local artists and then take the time to visit somewhere new in your CBD."

Advance Rockhampton Executive Manager, Mr Greg Bowden, said revitalizing our precincts including the CBD has been a key focus for 2021.

"This started with our Precinct Activation Survey last month and there will be more initiatives to come in the future," Mr Bowden said.

"We've been on the lookout for new opportunities to increase the diversity of offering in the CBD precinct, and saw the implementation of Saturday Sounds as a short term initiative to connect more locals to this area.

"Importantly, it's great to be able to support local artists and offer further opportunities to showcase the amazing talent Central Queensland has.

"The first session will see James Gallagher Band take the mic, performing well known cover songs from Paul Kelly, Bruce Springsteen, Johnny Cash, REM and JJ Cale.

"A Central Queensland singer/songwriter, you are likely to have caught James performing at River Festival, Village Festival, Great Keppel Island and across our local pubs and clubs."

The current artist line-up includes:

  • 24 April – James Gallagher Band
  • 1 May - Dave Dow
  • 8 May - Side Hustle
  • 15 May - MotherLove
  • 22 May – Mikayla J
  • 29 May – Michael Peters
  • 5 June – Chris Schick
  • 12 June – Scott Foden

Saturday Sounds will take place from 9am to 1pm.
