Saving street trees with stormwater

We're helping to protect more street trees from climate change by installing systems to capture stormwater for irrigation. These systems are being installed in the following three locations in May:

  • Erskine Avenue, Cheltenham (south side)
  • Gladstone Street, Sandringham (from Abbott Street to Sandringham Road)
  • Murray Street, Brighton East (from Hodder Street to Thomas Street).

The systems are installed under nature strips to divert stormwater so it can be absorbed through the tree root system. This will improve and maintain the health of the trees to better cope with the effects of climate change.

Other benefits include reducing pollutants entering our stormwater system and assisting in preventing local flooding during major rain events.

This project has been delivered as part of Council's Integrated Water Management Plan 2019-39, with works to be completed by the end of May 2022.
