School Sun Safe Upgrades Progress Over Summer

Minister for Education and the Arts The Honourable John-Paul Langbroek
  • School is out for summer for more than 560,000 students and 95,000 principals, teachers and school staff across Queensland's State Schools.
  • Work continues on many sun safe outdoor upgrades during the break with more than 80 schools receiving new or upgraded facilities.
  • Across Queensland, $30 million will be invested in playgrounds, sports courts, and outdoor learning spaces.
  • The Crisafulli Government is delivering a plan for Queensland's future after the former Labor Government's decade of decline.

The summer holidays are starting for 1,266 state schools and while students and staff enjoy a well-earned break, the Crisafulli Government is delivering more than $30 million in new sun safe outdoor learning and play spaces.

Work continues on many projects over the holidays, with a total of 80 schools benefiting from new sports courts, playgrounds, outdoor learning areas and shade sails to give all children a world-class education, inside and outside the classroom.

The sun safe upgrades follow more than $100 million for new classrooms in Brisbane, Cairns and Gold Coast, and more than $35 million for upgrades to schools in Ipswich.

After a decade of decline under the former Labor Government left one third of state school assets reaching end of life and a significant $441 million repair bill, the Crisafulli Government is delivering a fresh start for education.

The Crisafulli Government is delivering a plan for Queensland's future, and the sun safe upgrades are part of the record $21.9 billion Education Budget, which is building 15 new schools, delivering more teachers and teacher aides, and creating safer classrooms through the $45 million Behaviour Boost, $33 million anti-bullying action plan and with 150 new Workplace Health and Safety Officers.

Minister for Education John-Paul Langbroek said state school staff and students would return to new and upgraded outdoor infrastructure next year.

"Congratulations to all our hardworking teachers, principals, staff and students on a really incredible school year," Minister Langbroek said.

"I want to thank everyone for all their hard work and wish them a well-deserved Christmas break.

"While our schools enjoy their summer break, we will continue working to ensure our students and staff have fantastic new facilities to come back to.

"The Crisafulli Government is delivering sports courts, playgrounds, or new shade sails at 80 schools across the State to make sure students can enjoy the outdoors.

"Every Queensland student deserves access to a world-class education, regardless of where they live, and these upgrades help to deliver this."
