As children start the 2026 school year, drivers are reminded that when school is back, so are reduced speed limits.
Time-based school zones operate on weekdays during Victorian school terms, from 8am to 9.30am and from 2.30pm to 4pm.
Reduced speed limits are designed to keep children safe when they are travelling to and from school, getting on and off buses and using school crossings. Reduced speed limits also protect school crossing supervisors.
Moira Shire Council CEO Matthew Morgan said this was an important message, particularly after the longer holiday break over summer.
"The safety of our school children is a top priority. School crossings are also a workplace for our school crossing supervisors," Mr Morgan said.
There are 11 school crossings – in Cobram, Yarrawonga, Numurkah, Katamatite, Strathmerton and Wunghnu – that are supervised by approximately 20 Moira Shire staff.
"I urge all drivers to slow down and take extra care around schools as the new school year gets underway," Mr Morgan said.
"This will protect not only our children, parents and educators, but also our dedicated and hard-working school crossing supervisors.
"Please respect our school crossing supervisors, who are trained to support children's safety and who do an outstanding job."
