- New WasteSorted Schools Grants round opens 27 January 2026
- Grants of up to $5,500 available for eligible WasteSorted Schools
- Funding supports government priority to protect and restore our environment by reducing the impact of waste
Western Australian schools are being backed to cut waste and boost recycling, with a new round of WasteSorted Schools Grants opening for 2026.
By embedding waste reduction into everyday school life, these programs turn learning into lasting behaviour that helps protect and restore our environment.
WasteSorted Schools Grants are opening on 27 January and closing at 4pm on 10 March 2026.
The grants strengthen waste sorting and recycling at schools through practical upgrades and initiatives, including colour-coded bins and signage, Containers for Change bins, worm farms, and compost systems.
The program delivers tangible benefits for schools by helping to protect the environment, reduce waste costs, and promote positive waste behaviours among students, teachers, and the wider community.
Applications must be submitted through the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation's SmartyGrants portal. Schools are encouraged to read the WasteSorted Schools Grants guidelines before applying.
Schools can also apply to become an accredited WasteSorted School or view the most recent successful recipients via the WasteSorted Schools grants information page.
As stated by the Environment Minister Matthew Swinbourn:
"Schools are at the front line of building everyday habits that protect our environment and reduce waste.
"WasteSorted Schools Grants give schools the practical tools they need to turn good intentions into real action, from better recycling to smarter waste sorting.
"By supporting hands-on projects in schools, these grants help keep valuable materials out of landfill while teaching students how a circular economy works in practice."
