Western Australia's sea rescue heroes are now eligible for the National Medal, which recognises long and diligent service.
The Volunteer Marine Rescue Service (VMRS) had been the only volunteer group within the Department of Fire and Emergency Services that was not eligible for a National Medal.
Emergency Services Minister Francis Logan and the department advocated to the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet, requesting that the VMRS be deemed eligible for the National Medal.
The Governor-General Peter Cosgrove determined that the Western Australian Volunteer Marine Rescue Service is now eligible.
Individuals can now apply through the Department of Fire and Emergency Services to receive the National Medal, which is for organisations whose members risk their lives or safety to protect and/or assist the community in times of emergencies, natural disasters or enforcement of the law.
The medal is awarded for 15 years of diligent service followed by clasps for every additional 10 years of service.
As stated by Emergency Services Minister Francis Logan:
"I am very pleased that our sea rescue heroes are now eligible for the National Medal, which recognises the tireless efforts our volunteers put into keeping the community safe or rescuing people from harm.
"They are also called upon to find those who have lost their lives at sea, which is a grim task.
"The National Medal recognises long and diligent service by members of recognised government and volunteer organisations who risk their lives or safety to help others.
"Our State's Volunteer Marine Rescue Services certainly fit that bill, and it's fantastic that they can finally get the national recognition that has been afforded to their peers in other services."
